Why Organizing is Self-Care

Why Organizing is Self-Care

Start 2021 off right with these helpful wellness tips from mDesign

While everyone has said it, it bears repeating. 2020. Was. A. Year. As we sit back and reflect and figure out what our new goals are for 2021, there are little things we can do to help promote some self-care. I know you are thinking to yourself, organizing is self-care? Yes, it is a form of self-care! Clearing that clutter out of your space and mind is good for the soul. Don’t believe me? Try starting with a small area: your desktop, that junk drawer you can barely open, or your bathroom accessories.

While it looks like we are going to be stuck at home for a tad bit longer, let us improve our overall wellness with some simple tips and tricks.

Organize Your Space

Throwing away, donating, or finding a new home for things that don’t bring us joy any more can be very cathartic; it can also bring a new sense of peace. With all the craziness going on in the world outside of your control, having a clean, organized home can really alleviate some stress.

Where do you begin? Think about a space that you see every day and what would help you improve it. If you are working from home, I would start with your desk. Add a few pieces to help tidy up loose items like this desk organizer to help store your pens, pencils, notepads or anything else just cluttering your desk.

Next, move to your bathroom and create an at-home oasis so you can escape, even if it is for 10 minutes. Add a 4-piece accessory set to give your bathroom a spa-like feel without the spa-like expense! Simple changes yet satisfying.

Another positive effect of organizing is that it’s addicting. Once you see the potential in that under-sink real estate, you’ll catch the bug and want to rearrange everything. In short, just like most things in life, it all boils down to your attitude. Everyone looks at organizing as a chore, when in fact it aligns much more closely with self-care.

That’s right, getting your home in order is much more related to bubble baths and face masks than taking out the trash and doing the dishes. When we organize, we take back control of our life.

Take a Break During the Day

Working from home may make us feel like there is no line between work and home because, well, there isn’t one. Remember swinging by a co-worker’s desk on your way back from the bathroom? Or chatting with a colleague while grabbing a cup of coffee? Those are luxuries we don’t have while working alone in our homes, so stress and anxiety can build up. Taking small mindful breaks throughout the day will help calm that chaos. Try these effortless techniques:

Self Care - take a break tp de-stress during the day

Box BreathingThis method of slow, controlled breathing can help manage stress, anxiety, and even pain. It helps bring your heart rate down and clear your mind. It’s even Navy SEAL approved! mDESIGN TIP - use this technique to help you fall asleep at night, too.

Chair Stretches - Many of us are developing a bad habit of slouching while sitting in our home office all day. Stretching those muscles is key to fighting off those bad habits.

Move Your Body for 10 Minutes - Feel like you are gaining the quarantine 20 lbs? Oh, just me? Well, nevertheless, getting your body moving is essential to fighting fatigue. While most of us have mastered going from bed to home office to bathroom, you might want to put in some more effort. Here are some exercises you can do for just 10 minutes day. No equipment or $.

Whatever self-care means to you, take 10 minutes a day to do something for yourself.
