Budget Spa Baths

10 Steps to a beautiful spa bath

Okay, I get it. Everyone and their mother want to have a spa bath. I mean who doesn’t? Let me set the scene. You get up in the morning, stumble, half sleeping, into your “bathroom.” First, you switch the lights on and BAM, you are immediately hit in the face with 360 watts of fluorescent light! I literally HATE that. So, I ask you, is that how you want your day to start? Of course not! We want to roll out of bed gently, put on our fluffy slippers, tiptoe into a bathroom where the lights are activated with a dimmer switch and gently go from dim to brighter as our eyes learn to adjust to the lighting.

Yep, that’s what we want alright. But is that only for the rich and famous, or can average Joe’s (or Joyce’s) have that too? The truth is, we can. I never thought it possible until we moved into our new home that already had one of the bathrooms updated with spa features. The first time I woke up in my new home and turned on the bathroom light and immediately thought there was an electrical problem. I called an electrician and explained emphatically that there was something wrong with our wiring because when I turned the lights on in the bathroom they flickered, going from really dim to brighter. He laughed at me and said, “there is nothing wrong with your wiring ma’am, that was done deliberately so that your eyes could adjust.” What the heck was he talking about? I had never heard of such a thing! Now, I can’t imagine going back to the “old” way.

Anyhow, the point is, there are a handful of things you can do to create a spa-like retreat right where you are, and it doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg. The trick is to make a budget and then stick with it. Decide if you want to replace the big washroom pieces or if want to just give what you have a facelift. For those who would like to work within the “facelift” budget, I have laid out my…

10 Steps to a Beautiful Spa Bath

1 Decide on your budget – this is important because it will determine what elements you can add to your space. Some people will budget to include new tubs, showers, and flooring, while others will not be able to update those costly items. Changing out the smaller elements will still be a game-changer. If you can’t afford major updates, follow the next 9 steps and you will finally have your spa retreat.

2 Start from the inside and move outward - Remove all loose objects from the bathroom, closets, drawers, and cabinets.

3 If you are replacing any of the big stuff, do it now and then work storage and décor around the tub, shower, sink, and toilet.

4 Pick calming colors like soft gray, dove whites, taupe or light green. These colors are soft on the eye and they are easy to coordinate other elements with them. And speaking of light, it is well worth it to invest in dimmable lighting. It not only spares your retna but it also sets the mood.

5 Add fresh clean white linens and rugs. If your bath uses a shower curtain, I recommend mDesign’s Waffle Weave Fabric Curtain in either White or Stone. If you prefer a print, try mDesign’s Chevron Printed Shower Curtain in Gray/White.

6 Add natural elements. Place these plant stands in the corner of your bathroom and fill them with succulents and plants.

7 Keep décor simple and natural. Add rocks and wood elements to bring in the feel of nature. If space allows, you may want to add this 3-drawer Dresser with Baskets. It is perfect for adding storage and the tabletop allows you to place another piece of greenery and perhaps a lavender-scented candle atop it. Another inexpensive idea is to fill these 3-piece stylish apothecary jars with different colored and scented bath salts. Or, use one for bath salts and the others to store cotton swabs or cotton balls. They are versatile and a must!

8 Display towels in a beautiful basket or use one of our towel racks to display your plush towels. This towel rack adds dimension and functionality to your room.

9 Put everything away in a proper organization container. Use these Natural Woven Baskets to store lotions, shampoos, soaps and more on your closet shelves. You can fill the entire closet with these baskets! They are gorgeous and do their job keeping your closet organized.

10 Finally, add the right bathroom accessories. This is important because the right accessories can dramatically change to look and function of your room. One of my favorite ideas is to pair our Wood Trash Can with our simple yet sleek looking Soap Pump and Toothbrush Holder Set.
