Spring Cleanout: Operation Beauty Room!

If you don’t exactly consider yourself a beauty guru or fanatic and tend to stick with the basics of makeup, you may not be familiar with this little known fact: makeup, like food and medicine, has an expiration date. That’s right! Regulations require skincare and cosmetics companies to apply an expiration date on their products.

Don’t believe me? Take your favorite foundation, for example. If you look on the back of the bottle or the packaging it came in, you’ll see what looks like a little can with a floating lid above it. On the ‘can’ will be a number followed by ‘M’. This indicates how many months your item is good for once opened. You might see 6M, 12M, 18M, and so on.

Why is this important? You may realize a mascara you’ve had is all dried up or not applying like it used to. Think to yourself, when did you purchase the item? Odds are, it’s surpassed its expiration date, it’s not just a faulty product.

Additionally, this is extra important to be aware of, because it can be risky and harmful to use makeup or skincare products past their expiry date. Chemicals in the items could harm your skin and cause a reaction. When these mixtures of ingredients are sitting, bacteria can grow in the makeup as well, yuck!

The last thing you want to do is put something on your face, neck, mouth, or eyes that could cause a chemical or allergic reaction all because you didn’t realize these items do, in fact, expire. The expiration label is definitely different than any other kind you might see that just has a date printed on it, so it’s easy to miss. Now that you know, keep an eye out!

Don’t see this little symbol? There are standard rules you can follow when it comes to certain items. Mascara typically has a shelf life of 3-6 months, liquid foundation for 6-12 months, cream foundations/blush/shadows for 12-18 months, powder foundation/blush/shadows for 2 years, lipstick for 1 year and nail polish about 2 years.

Now that we know this important information, let’s clear out our old products and organize our still safe to use items.

As you’re going through and tossing any items that have passed their expiration date, you may notice some items you bought and never opened. Or, you might have opened it but only tried it once and changed your mind. What to do? You can donate! There are several organizations you can send your items to. Click on the link and see what is and isn’t accepted at the list of donating centers!

mDesign’s cosmetic spinning organizer is a fabulous option for maximizing your space’s potential. Not only is there space for organizing bottles, wipes, and spray bottles, but there is a second circular section inside that fits cotton swabs and additional items such as perfume, lotion, and nail polish!

Don’t need the extra compartment? The standard 9” spinner provides a low profile to easily display and access your items all while spinning 360 degrees!

For a more traditional makeup organization tactic, try a cosmetic organizer with drawers from mDesign. Eight separate, multi-sized compartments for brushes, makeup bottles, eyelash curlers, lipsticks, etc. as well as three large, open-front sections are great for skincare items, blushes, powder foundation, and other like-sized items. Below, you will find two clear-front drawers with pull-holes great for nail polish, beauty sponges, and smaller palettes or individual eyeshadows.

Diggin’ the drawers? You’re in luck! 2- and 3-drawer cosmetic organizers not only provide discreet and additional storage, but they are stackable, too! Mix and match to create the ultimate cosmetic storage center!

Now that your makeup is cleaned out, safe, and organized, let’s move on to making the second part of your daily routine quicker, easier, and cleaner: jewelry.

I commend those who have the time and energy in the morning to put on different jewelry that coordinates perfectly with their outfit every day. I tend to be the type of person to have a few staples that match most outfits and just pop in some studs or a simple necklace in the morning or before a night out.

Regardless of what kind of jewelry wearer you are, you probably have items you never wear or don’t wear anymore. Just like with makeup you don’t have use for, let’s give those unused items to a good cause. Here you can find a number of ways and places to donate jewelry that’s been nothing more than clutter in your home.

Of course, if you’re looking for extra cash, you can always sell good condition jewelry on online marketplaces and apps. As for the pieces that are tarnished or tangled beyond repair, it’s time to say goodbye! Toss those babies in the trash and start anew.

You’ll be more inclined to keep the pieces you do wear if you have a gorgeous and fun way to organize and display them. That’s where we come in! Our 4-drawer jewelry box with storage trays. The clear design allows you to see all your rings or earrings displayed in the top section before pulling it out and making your selection. Four different trays can be rearranged however you’d like, as they are removable! Each tray contains different size compartments to house bracelets, necklaces, watches, and more. And the best part? These jewelry organizers are stackable!
