Celebrate Our Kitty Kids
Me-wow, time to celebrate our kitty kids!
ME-WOW! Today, October 29th, is National Cat Day! Now I know there is a big divide between cat lovers and dog lovers, but I just happen to be both. I must confess, I never used to like cats at all. I have been allergic to them since I was very young. Of course, there is a story on how I became a lover of cats…well, at least my cat.
My eldest son, Nick, was in his third year of college when my younger son, John, was starting his sophomore year at a different college. John, who is a sweet young man, decided he needed companionship. He decided to move out of his dorm and into a small apartment so he could have a kitten. One day when Nick went to visit his brother John at school, he fell in love with John’s kitten, Lily. Nick returned home to our family’s house that weekend and declared he was in the market to buy a kitten.
Lo and behold, I had a brother whose cat just had a litter of kittens. As a family, we drove an hour to my brother’s house in the country to pick up Nick’s new little bundle of joy. He named her Chewy, so adorable! On our drive home, little Chewy threw up all over Nick’s shoulder. Nick, who is more finicky than a cat, was completely and immediately turned off! He thought about how awful his three-hour ride back to Ohio University would be if Chewy became car sick, and he didn’t want to put her through the torture.
When we arrived back at our family home, Nick declared he did not want to bring Chewy back to college with him. Somehow, he got it into his head that the drive would kill her! I pleaded and begged him to reconsider. I argued that I was allergic to cats, not to mention I didn’t like them. But he insisted that he made a mistake. I then tried to guilt him, as any good Italian mom would do. I reminded him that we had a new puppy named Maisy who was only six months old and still potty training. (To be fair, Maisy has never really mastered potty-training). In any case, I did NOT want the cat!
Nick rebutted that he wasn’t going to take the cat and that if I wanted to, I could return her to Uncle Jerry. The poor little kitty was just looking at me with those big brown eyes, as if to say, “please don’t send me back to that dirty old barn!” I just couldn’t do it.
I am happy to say that Chewy is now four-years-old and is the happiest cat I know! She loves the fresh outdoors and snuggles up to both Maisy and me. She has been the most amazing cat and I can’t imagine living without her. Every time Nick comes home to visit us, he threatens to take Chewy back with him, but I won’t have it! She is my heart and I love her, almost as much as Nick!
In honor of National Cat Day
and for your viewing pleasure, I am including a completely adorable video of my Chewy and Maisy playing as sisters from another mother.
Helpful reminders for your consideration:
- Have you had your cat spay or neutered?
- Are they up to date on vaccinations?
