Organize your Lipsticks for National Lipstick Day

Lipstick Storage Solutions that Make Getting Glam Easy

Happy National Lipstick Day! Before we celebrate, let’s just acknowledge that lipstick has had a pretty tough year. Between pandemic-related lockdowns and mask mandates, there’s hardly been a reason to wear makeup at all. But as the world re-opens and we bask in the post-pandemic glow of date nights and dinner parties, you better believe our faces are going to be “beat for the gods,” to borrow a phrase from RuPaul’s Drag Race.

Lipstick is such a staple in our lives that it’s become something of an economic indicator. The Lipstick Index —a term coined by Estée Lauder heir, Leonard Lauder — links lipstick sales to the health of the economy. During economic down times, lipstick is seen as an affordable luxury and sales surge. There’s been a slight generational shift, however; Gen Z prefers new nail polish as a pick-me-up when the Dow is down (check out our nail polish organization blog post). Still, lipstick remains one of the most frequently purchased cosmetic products.

So, stop by your favorite cosmetics counter, pick up a lipstick, and you’re good to go, right? Please— one tube doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface of the depth and breadth of textures and colors of lipstick! Cosmetics companies are busy devising newfangled lipstick formulas as we speak, but here are the five main types of lipstick:

The 5 Kinds of Lipstick:

  • Sheer: With just a touch of color and a hint of shine, sheer lipsticks are great for everyday wear. They’re also high in oil content and tend to be very moisturizing.
  • Cream: Cream lipsticks, including satins and frosts, are all about texture. They contain more wax than sheer lipsticks and, consequently, have more staying power. This is the perfect lipstick for the office.
  • Gloss: Gloss makes a statement. If you weren’t born with Angelina Jolie’s pretty pout, gloss’s high shine makes thin lips appear plumper and draws attention to your lovely smile.
  • Matte: Matte lipsticks bring old school glamour—think Bette Davis or Joan Crawford. Richly pigmented and shine-free, matte lipstick creates a bold look for a night out.
  • Stain: Stains make your lips look like you’ve just finished eating a bowl of succulent berries. They’re formulated to be long-lasting and relatively non-transferrable, so you don’t have to worry about leaving lipstick on wine glasses or kissed cheeks.

Color is the whole point of lipstick; otherwise it would be lip balm, right? In the 21st century, there are no limits to what color you can wear on your lips. Shades that used to be reserved for Halloween —goth black, neon yellow, midnight blue —are au courant these days. Go as bold as you like, but make sure you have these four mainstays in your collection:

The 4 Shades Every Makeup Lover Needs:

  • Classic Red: You could spend a lifetime searching for the perfect red. A true red contains equal amounts of blue and orange pigment and tends to look good on any skin tone. Check out Gwen Stefani, Zoe Kravitz, or Awkwafina for confident red lippy looks.
  • Berry: There’s something mysterious and alluring about a juicy plum shade on the lips. It’s versatile enough to work in the boardroom…or the bedroom. Google Rihanna, Mindy Kaling, or Selena Gomez nailing the dark lip trend on the red carpet.
  • Nude: Wear nude lips when you’re going big somewhere else on your face, like a bold brow or a smoky eye. Or wear it every day for a more polished, understated look. Look up pics of Zendaya, Meghan Markle, or Hailey Bieber for barely-there lipstick inspo.
  • Pink: Pink runs the gamut from a demure shimmer to an over-the-top pop of color. Put pink on when you want to bring out your feminine and flirty side. See Arianna Grande, Harry Styles (who’s proudly in touch with his feminine side), or Gigi Hadid for ideas about a proper pink pucker.

Great —you’ve amassed a pretty impressive lipstick collection. Take your beauty game to the next level and organize your lipsticks like a pro.

Why Organize Your Lipsticks?

Being intentional about home organization makes life easier —that’s true whether it’s a big job like a pantry or something on a smaller scale like lipsticks. How many times have you taken a pair of jeans out of the dryer and found a melted lipstick in the pocket; or bought a replacement lipstick and then discovered the tube you were looking for in an old handbag? Having a place for everything and keeping everything in its place helps you find your things when you need them.

Start organizing with a tube toss. Don’t store lipsticks you don’t use —ditch the colors that don’t quite work with your skin tone or have passed their expiration date. Signs that lipstick should be thrown away? If you notice moisture beads, funky smells, or chalky texture, it’s time to toss your lipstick.

Now that you’ve sorted your lipsticks, here are some mDesign storage solutions for any size collection.

This makeup storage organizer is a lipstick lover’s dream. It has 18 separate slots, so you can store lipsticks vertically and easily find what you’re looking for. You can arrange them by color, brand, or most frequently used. If your collection is larger, buy several organizers and place them side by side on your vanity or counter.
