Inexpensive Laundry Room Reorg!

How to create the world’s best laundry room on a budget

Whether big or small, old or new, I have the perfect laundry room solution for you! Thanks to Chip and Joanna Gaines for their farmhouse living spaces, the laundry room has now become one the most sought-after rooms in the house. This phenomenon has me scratching my head because twenty or thirty years ago when families were considerably larger than they are today, many people put their laundry rooms in their basements. Growing up in a family of ten, you can imagine the enormous amount of laundry my mother had to do. I remember mounds of different colored laundry scattered across our basement floor.

The HGTV stars created a farmhouse frenzy that has everyone clamoring to show off their once most hated room in the house, the laundry room. This newfound interest in the laundry room has also called for new ways to organize it. The most popular style of laundry room today is the “Farmhouse” look, which is great, but it can also be super expensive! All that wood and metal can take its toll on the wallet. So how do we get a great look for our laundry without being taken to the cleaners? Allow me to show you.

How to Organize a Small Laundry Room

  1. Start by taking measurements of your laundry room floor plan - there are a variety of apps that can help with this!

  2. Make a list of laundry room must-haves
    • Sink
    • Counter space
    • Cupboards to hide laundry detergents
    • Color sorted bins
    • Dry cleaning bin
    • Ironing Board
    • Hooks and rugs
    • Open shelving
    • Drying racks
    • Storage

  3. Layout where you want to put your washer and dryer, then build the room around them. It is also important to note that if you are adding a sink to your laundry room, because of plumbing, that should be taken into consideration as well.

  4. The most expensive part of a laundry remodel are the cabinets. Try replacing most cabinets with open shelving, which is a more cost-effective option, then use baskets and bins to store items.

  5. If you want to include some cabinets, try to find donated or used cabinets someone may be getting rid of, then paint them white or light gray. This shabby-sheik look is in!

  6. Adding plant stands or decorative shelving can also be inexpensive and easy to mount.

  7. Then, include necessities such as a mounted drying rackhooks and rugs, and laundry hampers to complete the look and functionality.
