3 Spooky Serving Tips

3 Spooky Serving Tips

Serve up something spooky and fun this Halloween season!

It’s spooky season! Halloween is quickly approaching and with it comes with all kinds of fun activities, both for children and adults.

Growing up, Halloween was my least favorite holiday. From the movies to the costumes to haunted houses, I was way too much of a scared-y cat to handle it! As an adult, it has much more of an appeal. Not only are the costumes better, the movies are now funny to me rather than scary. Decorating my apartment for Halloween and being able to hand out candy to little ones trick or treating gives me a whole new perspective on the holiday.

Finding and thinking of new ways to display jack-o-lanterns, skull decorations and candy is so fun! Sure, you could put them in a bowl on the front porch and call it a day. Or you could put your carved pumpkin in the window for all to see, but you’re missing out on all the fun of getting into the Halloween spirit and creating something your friends will be talking about!

When it comes to candy storage (whether it’s secretly just for you or if you’re handing it out), why not incorporate it into a seasonal centerpiece instead of just a plain old bowl of candy? Here’s an idea for any coffee table, kitchen island, dinner table or even your front porch:

1 Take a lazy Susan turntable and turn it into a functional Halloween display!

  • Use one of mDesign’s plastic lazy Susan turntables in black for a spooky feel.
  • Add some pumpkins and gourds (real or fake, carved or not, up to you!
  • Add a small Halloween bowl or mug filled with some yummy treats like fun sized candy, candy corn, etc.
  • Add a taller item to give it some dimension – maybe a small plant with fake spider webs in it or a skeleton figure!
  • This can also be used as a chip/dip holder. Put a dip in the middle, chips around the outside and spin it around as your guests finish them off.

Basically, all you need are some easy decorations you can add to the lazy Susan, you’ve got yourself a quick centerpiece. Once you’ve added some candy, it serves as a way to share an after-dinner snack at the table or a conversation piece when company sits around the coffee table in the living room. Place it on your porch on a small table and allow trick or treaters to grab a piece or two (or three) ... The turntable can also be used for various other occasions and purposes after the Halloween season.

Another part of Halloween I have come to thoroughly enjoy as an adult are all the fun costume parties. If you’re hosting one, there can be a lot of pressure to have the best decorations, food, and costume – all eyes are on you! A crowd-pleaser for a simple, finger food snack, is a charcuterie board. Mostly anyone will like at least something from it – cheese, meat or crackers (or all three if you’re like me!). The fun part about hosting a party is being in control of the decorating. Here’s a super easy idea of how to display such a spread:

2 Take a slate serving tray from mDesign. These have the perfect look for a mostly black-themed party and can be used again after the party is over for other events!

  • The slate tray is offered both with and without handles – whatever your preference!
  • Place it on your designated food table amongst your other pumpkin and skull décor.
  • You have a clean slate – get it? – to arrange your snacks. A section for cheese, an arrangement of crackers, maybe even some cut up fruit in the mix for a healthier option.
  • This tray is chalk friendly, adding a lot of opportunity for creativity to your arrangement. You can label what you have out or write/draw a fun saying or picture.
  • Easy to clean off when you are done!

If you have a sweet tooth like me, you’ll want to make sure you include some creative Halloween desserts for your guests, family or even just for your own enjoyment! This is a great idea for a sweet treat that is both eye-catching and delicious:

3 Using mDesign’s plastic storage canister jars, create a layered dessert in two or three of these and place them in different parts of the house/table.

  • The dessert can consist of candy layers – marshmallows, candy corn, chocolate chips, licorice. Or something served up with a spoon – alternating layers of chocolate pudding with cookies and cream cookies crushed up, and gummy worms sticking out of it at the top and between the layers. Add some marshmallow ghosts at the top to complete the graveyard look!
  • As with the other items, with Thanksgiving and Christmas/Hanukkah around the corner, these jars can be washed and used again for other display or food serving purposes.
